Dr Song Yao BSc(Hons) PhD (Monash)

Head, Neurovascular Biology — Systems Neurophysiology

I am a cardiovascular systems neurophysiologist interested in determining how the brain controls cardiovascular function. My laboratory has two main focuses. The first is trying to understand the role of the blood-brain barrier in maintaining control of cardiovascular homeostasis. To this end I am interested in the makeup of the neurovascular unit, pericytes, astrocytes, microglia and microvascular endothelial cells (and their tight-junction proteins). The second focus is in exploring neurogenesis in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) – a primitive part of the brain stem that is critical to blood pressure regulation.
