Prof. Fernando Calamante PhD

Laboratory Head, MRI Blood Flow and Brain Connectivity Laboratory — Imaging

  • Bio
After I finished my BSc degree in Physics (with Honours, GPA=9.4/10) in Argentina, I was awarded the prestigious British Chevening Scholarship (The British Council) to study MRI in the UK (1994). I later carried out my PhD in MRI at University College London, where I was appointed Lecturer in Biophysics in 2000. I relocated to Melbourne in 2005, where I am currently a Florey Senior Principal Research Fellow at The Florey Institute, and Professor at the University of Melbourne (Florey Department of Neuroscience and Mental Health).

My main areas of research are the development of methods for Perfusion MRI and Diffusion MRI, brain connectivity, and their applications to epilepsy, stroke and mental health. I have gained international recognition for my work on bolus-tracking Perfusion MRI in particular, which is highly cited and at the forefront of the field. My review article on Perfusion MRI is the most cited review in this field to date. I am also highly recognised for my work in Diffusion MRI methods to delineate white matter pathways, with our MRtrix software tool widely used worldwide (with over 8000 downloads). More recently, I have developed a new means of Super-resolution MRI based on the information contained in whole-brain fibre-tracking, which has also attracted great interest from industry, including a "Work in Progress" (WiP) package developed in collaboration with Siemens (Erlangen, Germany).

I have been actively involved in the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM, with 7000+ members). For example, I was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Society (2012-2015), and Chair of its Diffusion and Perfusion Study Groups (with 1000+ members, 2009-2013, 2014-2016). I was also appointed to several of its Committees, including Chair of the MRI Safety Committee (2013-2017), and member of the Annual Meeting Program Committee (2007-2009, 2016-2019), the Web Editorial Board (2013-2017), Workshops & Study Group Committee (2010-2013, 2015-2016), Chapters Committee (2010-2011), and Ad-hoc Committee on Electronic Media. I have also organised several other ISMRM-related activities, including Educational Courses, Plenary Lectures, and 3 Workshops (Italy 2004, Brazil 2007, USA 2012).
