Professor Andrew Gundlach
BSc (Hon), DipEd, PhD

Professor Andrew Gundlach is a Senior Principal Florey Research Fellow and Head of the Peptide Neurobiology Laboratory within the Discovery Science theme. Prof Gundlach received his PhD in neuroscience from The University of Melbourne and was subsequently awarded an NHMRC CJ Martin Fellowship and an NHMRC Senior Research Fellowship for research on central peptide systems. He is co-founder of Somnivore, a start-up enterprise pursuing novel solutions for sleep analysis and neural feedback technology.

Prof Gundlach is a globally-recognised leader in molecular neuroscience and peptide neurobiology, with a recent focus on relaxin-family peptides and their neural membrane receptors in the control of arousal, memory and related complex behaviours. Recent insights from this research indicate that a range of mental health conditions, including dementia, anxiety and addiction, could potentially be treated by modulators of the relaxin-family and related peptide receptors.

Prof Gundlach has published extensively with an h-index of 42, and has a significant network of scientific collaboration, with links with investigators at The Florey, elsewhere in Australia, and in Canada, France, Germany, Poland, Spain and USA. Prof Gundlach is actively involved in research teaching, and has supervised 10 PhD students to completion in the last 6 years. He currently supervises 2 PhD students, including a candidate studying for a joint PhD at The University of Melbourne and the University of Bordeaux.

Prof Gundlach is passionate about collegiate activity and mentoring, and is a member of the Florey Equity in Science committee, PhD Progress committees, and presentation judging panels. He is an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience and on the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Neuroanatomy, Neuropeptides and Nature Scientific Reports. He is a member of the IUPHAR Nomenclature Committee for relaxin peptides and receptors, and a council member of the International Society for Neurochemistry and International Behavioural Neuroscience Society.
