
Scientific services and facilities
The Florey is home to some of the world’s most advanced scientific equipment and services.
We are located in the heart of the medical research precinct in Parkville, opposite the Royal Melbourne Hospital and in Heidelberg, adjacent to Austin Health.
These facilities serve researchers from the Florey and nearby medical research institutes, The University of Melbourne, other universities, government research agencies and industry. All platforms operate on a fee for services basis for all services and facility access.

Advanced Microscopy and Immunochemistry
The Florey Advanced Microscopy and Immunochemistry Service (FAMIS) offers a collection of state-of-the-art light microscopy equipment and image processing tools.

Australian National CJD Registry
The ANCJDR is under contract to the Commonwealth Department of Health and is responsible for the national surveillance of clinically suspected and diagnosed human prion diseases in Australia.

Behaviour Facility
The behaviour facility in Parkville offers state of the art rodent behavioural testing equipment for internal and external academics and commercial bodies.

Bioresources
The Bioresources team is committed to the reliable progression of the most effective therapeutic candidates into full preclinical development.

Clinical Discovery Unit
The IMPACT Strategic Research Centre based at Deakin University and Barwon Health and the Florey are collaborating to investigate oxidative stress and psychiatric illnesses. We are conducting clinical trials of the use of antioxidant treatments for psychiatric illnesses.

Histology and Neuropathology
This facility provides neuropathology diagnostics and research resources for histological studies on both human and research animal tissues.

Human MRI
Our imaging facilities include two 3 tesla human MRI scanners dedicated to research (Heidelberg campus) and a 7 tesla human MRI (one of only two in Australia) located at our Parkville campus.

Human PET / CT
The Florey together with The University of Melbourne hosts an advanced simultaneous PET/CT scanner dedicated to research.

National Dementia Diagnostics Laboratory
The NDDL is the only NATA accredited diagnostic laboratory in Australia that provides 14-3-3 and Tau CSF protein testing.

Statistics and Decision Analysis academic platform provides expertise in the data, quantitative, and statistical aspects of basic science, clinical, imaging, and health services research carried out at Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health

Victorian Brain Bank
Our aim is to provide researchers, both in Australia and internationally, with high quality, well characterised post-mortem human brain tissue and related samples that will facilitate research into discovering the causes and consequences of different brain and mental disorders.
