Schizophrenia: update on current research and advice for patients and families

Professor Christos Pantelis is an NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow, Foundation Professor of Neuropsychiatry and Scientific Director of the Melbourne Neuropsychiatry Centre at The University of Melbourne and Melbourne Health. He is an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the Florey and heads the Adult Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit at Sunshine Hospital.

Using imaging, Prof Pantelis focuses on understanding how the brain changes in structure, function and connectivity (including the brain’s wiring) as young people develop severe psychotic disorders, like schizophrenia. He and his team are examining how these changes differ from normal development occurring in childhood and adolescence. He is studying the stages of illness, from before the first psychotic episode, to find the causes including the role of stress, cannabis and brain inflammation.
