The Florey has three laboratories conducting dementia research:
- Neurochemistry Laboratory led by Dr Siew Yeen Chai
- Neural Plasticity Laboratory led by A/Prof Anthony Hannan
- Interoception Laboratory led by Dr Michael Farrell

Australian Statistics
- More than 162,000 Australians have been diagnosed with dementia, with perhaps as many again in the early stages of dementia.
- Australians over the age of 65 have a 1 in 15 chance of developing the disease.
- 1 in 9 Australians between the ages of 80 and 84 suffer from dementia and among those aged over 85, the rate is 1 in 4.
- In 2041, it is estimated that Australia will have a population of 25 million people, of which approximately 460,000 will have dementia.
- In Victoria in 2007, 56,000 people live with dementia and 40 new cases are diagnosed every day.
- By 2016, dementia will be the condition causing the most 'burden of disease'.
- According to the World Health Organization, only 2% of dementia cases start before the age of 65 years. After this the prevalence doubles with every five-year increment in age.
- 24 million people have Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias and it is projected that the number of people affected by dementia will double every 20 years.

Led by Dr Justin Rubio, the Neurogenetics Laboratory investigates the genetic basis of human neurological disease.
