The Victorian Stroke Telemedicine (VST) initiative is a new project linking doctors at Bendigo Health to a network of Melbourne-based neurologists who will provide treatment advice about patients with stroke symptoms in the Bendigo region. Neurologists have real-time access to vital patient data, brain imaging, and high quality audio-visual communication to facilitate remote consultations.
The project’s aim is to expand upon an existing telemedicine program at Bendigo Health to enhance access to acute stroke treatments where early intervention is critical.
The expected benefits for patients will be a reduction in disabling consequences of stroke, an improvement in quality of life for stroke patients and their relatives and carers. If successful, the practice model may be used as a template for telemedicine in other hospitals across regional Victoria.
The project has been defined into clear stages of implementation to enable full development of the VST program using formative evaluation methods. The graph below demonstrates the stages of implementation.

VST is led by the Florey Neuroscience Institutes in partnership with the Department of Health, Bendigo Health, Loddon Mallee Rural Health Alliance, Ambulance Victoria and the National Stroke Foundation. This project has received funding from the Victorian State Government - Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development. The Stroke Association of Victoria Inc. is also providing advice to the project team. Technical support has also gratefully been provided by Polycom and Telstra.
The Chief investigators are Professor Christopher Bladin, Dr Dominique Cadilhac, Ms Sonia Denisenko, A/Professor Helen Dewey, Professor Peter Disler, Mr Tony Walker, Mr Bruce Winzar, and Dr Ian Mosley.
