The brain regulates body temperature, keeping it within a narrow range. The consequences when this fails can be life-threatening: elderly people, whose temperature regulation may be impaired, frequently die of heat stroke during heat waves. The Systems Electrophysiology laboratory looks into the master temperature controller region in the brain called the preoptic area.
