Training
The INF microscopy unit is situated on Level 3 of the Howard Florey Institute (Cnr of Royal Parade & Grattan Street, Parkville).
- The unit provides services for advanced microscopy techniques including optical microscopy, confocal microsopy, spinning disc live cell imaging, fluorescent microscopy, stereology, image analysis, TIRF microscopy.
-User training for new users: including theory and practical sessions on the instuments.
-Scientific and technical consultation and advise on confocal microscopy, fluoresence microscopy including choice of method and tips on preperation.
- Consultations on recognition of common structures under the microscope for new users, and interpreting and evaluation of data obtained from the instruments.
- Image analysis and quantification using advanced imaging software.
-A point of contact for microscopy equipment suppliers and related reagent and consumables.
- Routine sectioning , frozen sectioning and staining are also perfomed in the unit under the supervision of the Histology Manager. Details can be found on the INF Histology Site.
The following guidelines apply for training requests:
Introductory Session
All new students who intend to use the microscopy equipment should attend an intoductory session to view a run through of the equipment available and how it can be used. This will provide an overview of techniques available, preperation of samples and handling digital images.
- Once completed student are then able to access training on individual instruments as required.
Follow Up Instrument Training
Instrument operator training will be conducted by Jacqueline Mills, who is responsible for ensuring that the trainee meets minimum levels of knowledge and competency. Several practical sessions may be required.
