Maintain Your Brain

- Prof Frederick Mendelsohn delivers a Maintain Your Brain presentation.
The Program
The Howard Florey Institute introduced its Maintain Your Brain community education program at the beginning of 2004 and has delivered it to more than 3,000 people from community groups, including University of the Third Age, Probus branches and community health organisations throughout greater Melbourne and regional Victoria.
The free program is presented by some of Melbourne's leading neuroscientists and aims to raise awareness of debilitating brain and mind disorders, as well as giving the audience an insight into the neuroscience revolution and the latest research being undertaken at the Howard Florey Institute.
Speakers
The speakers available to deliver Maintain Your Brain presentations are:
Professor Frederick Mendelsohn
Director of the Howard Florey Institute
'The neuroscience revolution: an overview of recent discoveries'
Professor Malcolm Horne
Deputy Director of the Howard Florey Institute
'Parkinson's disease'
Professor Bevyn Jarrott
'Stroke'
Professor Trevor Kilpatrick
'Multiple Sclerosis'
Dr Andrew Lawrence

Dr Tony Hannan
'Huntington's disease and schizophrenia'

Program Format
The Maintain Your Brain presentation commences with a PowerPoint slide show that lasts between 25 and 45 minutes; questions are then invited. This is quite engaging for the audience, as almost everyone has had, or knows someone with, a brain disorder. Question time usually lasts for 30 minutes but can be shortened or lengthened to suit your function.
At the end of the presentation, a Florey representative will provide information on the Institute's public relations and fundraising activities.
Program Requirements
The Maintain Your Brain program can be delivered to any community or business group in Victoria. However, minimum audience numbers are required and are dependant on the location of the presentation (further information will be provided when making a booking).
In addition, equipment required at the venue includes:
- Screen (to project PowerPoint slides onto)
- Table to hold projector
- Table to place our brochures and newsletters on
- PA system for large audiences
- Extension leads and a double adaptor.
