Research Interests
Dr Farrell uses functional brain imaging techniques to measure brain activity associated with interoceptive sensations. Early in his research career, Dr Farrell used psychophysical techniques to implicate peripheral and spinal neural processes in plasticity of pain responses under physiological conditions and in association with musculoskeletal disease. Dr Farrell received a Neil Hamilton Fairley fellowship from the NHMRC to undertake functional brain imaging of pain in the laboratory of Dr Richard Gracely at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Since returning to Melbourne, and taking up a position as a Senior Research Officer at the Howard Florey Institute, Dr Farrell has expanded his interest in interoception to include thirst, hunger, thermal sensation, sexual arousal and the urge to cough. Dr Farrell has had a long standing interest in ageing process, and the impact of age-related diseases on sensory processing.
