Melbourne Brain Centre

The Melbourne Brain Centre earmarks an era of collaboration between the major forces in brain research in Australia.

The $200 million building project across two campuses in Parkville and Heidelberg accommodates 700 staff and students from the Florey, the University of Melbourne and the Mental Health Research Institute.

Laboratory and office space is shared and meeting rooms, corridors and quiet areas have been designed with the specific aim of enhancing informal conversation – the best way to generate and discuss new ideas. The 250 seat lecture theatre has wireless internet connection and the laboratory, imaging and data processing spaces offers scientists the latest in technology.

Designed from the outset to comply with the highest environmental standards, the facilities reduce the carbon footprint of the partners. The collection, storage and use of water, advanced light and ventilation controls, and upgrades in IT contribute to a more sustainable way of conducting research.

The design, construction and specialist fit-out of these facilities has been funded through significant assistance from the Federal Government of Australia, the Victorian Government, the University of Melbourne, the Ian Potter Foundation, the Myer Foundation and family and many other benefactors.

The Florey and its partners are very grateful for their ongoing support.
